Happy New Year and nice post.
I agree with...Mike;

Happy New Year and nice post.

I agree with you wholeheartedly about both your winners and losers selections (of both the sports and marketing variety), but believe a few have been left off both sides of the ledger

It may seem obvious to list Oregon and OSU (I will not conform to that self-absorbed "tOSU" nonsense that is so popular in Columbus) as winners, but beyond the game and the opportunity to advance, you have to recognize that both programs are now able to shed some of the baggage detractors have been hanging on them of late.

MSU is a surprising winner from yesterday --the onmly games they lost all year?? OSU and Oregon.

In the loser column -- and as an ACC fan it pains me to say this -- you went waaaaaaayy too light on FSU. They were simply disgraceful yesterday, and Herbstreit's calling them out for quitting was well deserved. Beyond that. they played stupid football, and the lack of sportsmanship at the end of the game is inexcusable. I would suggest that behavior should be brought to the attention of the President of the University and the ACC Commissioner. Really just another reflection of what has become a very bizarre culture in that program.

I believe Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby's role as a loser was confirmed yesterday. His refusal to anoint a single Big 12 Champion was Solomonic and resulted in the sacrifice of both babies. While committee politics were such that the Big 12 Champ might still have been jumped by OSU, his decision made it all too easy for the committee to do so.

Paul Finebaum might also be considered a loser -- can't wait to hear how he spins all this

This was a wonderful first edition of the playoffs, but with five P5 conferences and 4 slots, it is imminently clear that a tournament of 8 is necessary.

Finally, your comments on ESPN's production reminds me that I have heard nothing on whether they plan to reprise a version of last year's championship "Mega Cast". I watch about half of the game via the Coach's Huddle, and thought it was excellent. Kevin Sumlin and Steve Addazio's comments added a whole different level of insight. I talked to Addazio a few weeks back at a cocktail party and asked if he was going to do it again this year. He responded "I hope so", but that nothing firm had been pinned down.

Mike do you have any insights into what ESPN's plans for the championship are?

Again, thank you for posting and tweeting this.

Tom Weigmantweigmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08056149173039042672noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7888925969988891820.post-43271493780788842382013-04-07T22:18:51.114-05:002013-04-07T22:18:51.114-05:00I totally agree--it's such a classic.I totally agree--it's such a classic.Mike Goffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03413495575998550640noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7888925969988891820.post-85177016092066103782013-04-07T20:08:35.782-05:002013-04-07T20:08:35.782-05:00Michigan plays my favorite fight song in college a...Michigan plays my favorite fight song in college athletics: "Hail to the Victors!" :)Ravi Dasarihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11900460236613683852noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7888925969988891820.post-56908611757120391192013-03-20T12:08:06.741-05:002013-03-20T12:08:06.741-05:00I love it! The purpose of the report was to set a goal of 30 medals in London. The study reported that many athletes arrived tired in Beijing. Do I understand you correctly? Do T&F athletes run races before the Olympics for money? Is that why NBC commentators are always talking about how tired the T&F runners are? So, they don't really represent America. They are on the team to put themselves in a position to rake in the dough at other places. Why is this about diversity? Anyone who knows anything about management and leadership knows this is not something that can be fixed by paying athletes or changing a CEO or a few board members. The whole organization has to be disbanded and built back up from scratch with values and objectives in the right place.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7888925969988891820.post-91117464884088920822012-04-08T22:37:43.517-05:002012-04-08T22:37:43.517-05:00I think the NCAA and NBA need to use the baseball ...I think the NCAA and NBA need to use the baseball example for basketball as well: let them go pro after high school if they want, but if they choose college, they must stay for three years.

I think that would be fantastic for college basketball and its fans.Matt Rowlandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06546919413814788373noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7888925969988891820.post-41541468614821751082012-03-28T16:00:29.576-05:002012-03-28T16:00:29.576-05:00It depends upon which poll you use, which is why I...It depends upon which poll you use, which is why I used the term "pundits." Yet, Missouri only played four "Big Six" games in the non-con--Notre Dame and Cal (both in the CBE Classic), Villanova and the annual game against Illinois. Kansas played Kentucky (Champions Classic); Georgetown, UCLA and Duke in the Maui Classic; South Florida, Ohio State and USC. And, they played Long Beach State--who will win the Big West--plus Davidson, winner of the Southern Conference.

The best RPI ratings, by MU's non-con foes, are California (37) and Notre Dame (39), followed by Illinois (85.) After that, ODU has a 108 and Mercer a 130, then it drops to RPIs of 204, 219, 248, 300, 327, 330 and 344.

While teams like ODU and Nova are down, the reality is that MU's non-conference schedule had too many teams that weren't even of mid-major variety.Mike Goffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03413495575998550640noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7888925969988891820.post-35533128398140220782012-03-08T19:31:55.388-06:002012-03-08T19:31:55.388-06:00My main issue with the SOS argument is that not al...My main issue with the SOS argument is that not all teams and games are created equal. According to Pomeroy, RPI, etc, a loss to a good team (i.e. KU) is better than winning a game against, say, Kennesaw State.

To teams like MU and KU, playing the #150 ranked RPI team is no different than #300; they'll beat them both by 20+ points. Part of scheduling is luck; are you going to schedule a team from a mid-major that is good-to-great? What if they fall off? Old Dominion was an MU opponent this year, a road opponent. The previous 3 years a win over them on the road would be huge. This year, they've slumped.

Or Villanova. NCAA tournament team that completely fell apart this year.

You'll recall this: a few years back, the Missouri Valley conference banded together to basically take advantage of the RPI system. They scheduled teams in the non-con that wouldn't hurt them, league wide, but when it came time for the NCAA tournament, the committee wasn't too impressed; they ignored the RPI numbers and focused on who those teams beat, which was basically no one. Only the tournament champion made it.

This is a long post to basically say, Missouri has quite a few top 50 wins, 10 or 11 I believe. If Missouri and Kansas meet and Missouri wins for the second time in three meetings, the committee is going to have a difficult decision to make. KU won the regular season by 2 games, which is a huge deal. I think the only way MU gets a 1 seed is by beating KU. If KU loses to Baylor tomorrow and MU still wins the tournament, I think both teams would be a 2 seed; MU needs another win vs. KU.

It should be fun though!Matt Rowlandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06546919413814788373noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7888925969988891820.post-63545875542762286032012-02-09T11:32:47.623-06:002012-02-09T11:32:47.623-06:00College basketball is all about coaching, and bayl...College basketball is all about coaching, and baylor doesn't have it.
